Message from the President

It is my pleasure to address you, the Conejo Valley United Soccer Club family, in this inaugural issue of our newsletter. In the months since our last AGM, much has transpired and it’s been a wonderful story thus far.

As a result of your belief in the mission of CVUSC, the club is on solid financial footing. We have implemented new procedures that will safeguard your assets in the future and have created an atmosphere of transparency and openness that should serve us well in the future.

Our new and much improved web site is a symbol of the new CVU. Doug Easton, our Webmaster, has kept it interesting, professional and made it a useful source for all kinds of information. Visit it frequently, and please share your stories so we can all share in the growth and success of our players.

Speaking of success, this season exceeded all expectations on the soccer field. At least six teams finished within the promotion spots (with one or two others on the bubble) in CSL last year, providing us with a huge and welcome challenge in the upcoming year. One team will be moving up to the gold level and several more to the silver elite level. Few other locally based teams can boast of these achievements.

How are we planning to meet this challenge? By relying on the great CVUSC trainers that have brought our club to this level. Our next issue will focus on the achievements of these trainers and what we may expect from them in the upcoming season.

Martin Belak-Berger, President

2009 Tournament of Champions
The countdown to the 2009 CVU Memorial Day Tournament of Champions has begun!

This is our only major fundraising effort each year and all of the funds raised through the tournament come back to the players, teams, and families in some form. We are striving to make the 2009 Tournament our most successful ever, but we need the help of every CVU family to make that happen. Here’s what you can do to help...

Coaches, trainers and managers...
  • Register your team now for the tournament. Click here to begin the registration process.
  • Extend an invitation to all of the teams that you have had contact with. A personal call is the most effective way to make this happen.
Our extended CVU family...

We need each team to provide a volunteer for the tournament committee. While I have had some good response, there are still quite a few teams without a representative. The following are some of the areas where we still need help:
  • Publicity: assist Doug Easton in publicizing the tournament and recruiting teams, possibly creating tournament newsletter, including selling advertising.
  • Fields: assist Scott Engel in the layout and preparation of the fields; possibly coordinate with AYSO for use of nets, porta-potties and securing waste management services.
  • Vendors: assist Gary Ghazarian in procuring vendors for the weekend of the tournament.
  • Registration: assist Kathy Belak-Berger in finalizing registration info, printing out game cards and preparing for team check-in.
  • Tournament FAQ: assist Tracy Friedl in fielding questions submitted to tournament website.
  • Tournament SWAG: inventory stock of pins/medals/t-shirts, order additional items and package for distribution.
  • Field Monitor coordinator: solicit volunteers from each team to work as field monitors during the tournament, schedule and train monitors (this job does require you to be at the fields most of the weekend of the tournament); I will pass along my material from last year.
  • Hotels: contact local hotels for possible tournament sponsorship and/or block pricing (again, I already have some of this information to start).
  • Possible other miscellaneous items: picking up items for tournament day (trash bags, gloves, ice, etc.); coordinate First Aid station; create map/amenities guide for visitors (restaurants, sporting goods stores, etc.).

You can see that there are a variety of jobs involving different skill sets and time commitments. Every year the load often falls on the same shoulders, please make it different this year and give a little back to the club so that we can continue to serve the youth of our neighborhoods. I will make this promise - no pointless meetings, and when we do need to meet, there will be snacks!

I am very excited to work with you all to put on a terrific tournament! Please contact me at tournament@cvusc.com with team rep names (and job assignment requests, if any) or any questions you might have.

Thank you for your support!

Tracy Friedl, Tournament Director

Focus on Teams - CVU White G93 Strikers

The CVU White G93 Strikers as they are known now began playing club soccer at the U12 age group. The very first team was made up of 95% Moorpark All-Star girls and coaches and trainers. Before we decided to go club we went to a club tournament as an AYSO select team to see how we matched up. Besides the heat, big fields and only 11 players against most club teams with 16 to 18 players we went 1-1-1 and fit right in.

We started our club team in May and went out and played in 8 club tournaments throughout the summer to figure out how we needed to play. We were very athletic, in shape, tough and really competitive which served us well as we began to learn the technical aspects and tactical part of club soccer.

Our first season in bronze we went 13-0-0 and had a fantastic season and got to the round of 16 in league cup. Paty Meza from our team was selected CVU girl player of the year at the annual AGM that year. Our second year we were in Silver and went 7-4-3, finished 4th and our goalie Kasey Magallanes was selected as CVU girl player of the year at the AGM. The third year in Silver we were 4-3-7 and once again finished in fourth. Besides a couple of teams in our league who tried to play the game, the majority of the teams just tried to tie us which lead to a very frustrating season.

After our second year we began to expand our recruiting and now have a lot of girls from a variety of local cities, Simi Valley, Oak Park, Thousand Oaks and Moorpark. This past year in U15 we solved our challenges and went 13-1-1 and finished first, and also had the best Silver record in U15 for all of CSL. We will be moving up to Silver Elite for sure next year but will petition to be moved to gold. We have won 6 tournaments as a team and finished runner up 6 more times. We have played sand beach soccer and indoor soccer and have traveled to Las Vegas to play.

Presently we have (4) girls (Lindsey, Selina, Paty and Nicole) playing varsity at Moorpark High School. Kat plays varsity at Oak Park, and Jessie plays varsity at Royal. The reminder of the girls (Ashley, Laura, Nikko, Bree, Jordon, Christine, Courtney, Rochelle, Noam, Kasey, and Nicki play JV at various high schools in the area.

About us......... the name "Strikers" was picked from a contest we had with all the girls when we formed the team so have always tried to keep it as part of us. One of our talented parents has developed logos, t-shirts, and sweatshirts that were unique to us and we give them to the girls at different times of the year. We have a very, very strong parent family that allows the team to thrive and succeed. It is a challenge to fit in all that is in these girls’ lives, especially when they reach high school. We encourage the girls to be active in other sports and school functions, if possible.

We have very simple requirements for the girls to be a part of the team. #1. Family comes first. #2. School comes second (must keep a B average to play). #3. Soccer comes third.

We try to have fun whenever possible. We celebrate all the girls’ birthdays at practice and have played football and dodge ball at practice just to add spice to the girl’s lives. On many of our travel tournaments we will have family game night and scavenger hunts and other fun things to build team spirit and bring families closer together.

Our practices are extremely organized and have specific goals to be achieved. We take great pride in making sure we provide the opportunity for each girl to improve their skills and soccer knowledge every time they step out on the practice field. With limited time we use guest trainers and whatever resource we can acquire to enrich our soccer players experience. We have put on summer camps for our players and travel to scrimmage local quality teams to improve each and every day.

What truly makes us unique is we are a family based club soccer team. We are trying to grow the most competitive soccer players we can in the best environment possible. The girls are, our family and we care for each and every one of them and will do whatever we need to help them succeed today, tomorrow and into the future. We want our girls to be the best they can be as soccer players, students, teenagers, college students and eventually as adults.

The CVU Strikers will always be looking to improve our training, our talent, and the lives of everyone we come in contact with out on the "pitch".

Editor’s note: We plan to publish a bio of a different CVU team in each edition of the CVU newsletter. To have your team featured contact publicity@cvusc.com.

Training Tips
There are a number of different people around us that motivate us as soccer players. For the youth player some of these might be parents, siblings, coaches, and peers. However as the youth player grows in skill, maturity, and confidence, perhaps the most important form of motivation is that which comes from within. It is a truth that any athlete that hopes to achieve a higher level of success must be self motivated. At the point where the player becomes self motivated they will start seeking ways to improve themselves outside of regular team practice. This might be working with an individual trainer on ball skills, running to improve endurance, or even just juggling with the ball for 10 minutes a day.

Here are some mini video clips showing some basic to intermediate foot skills. All of these can be done in the backyard and many of them can be done indoors on a carpeted floor (with your parents’ permission, of course!). Set aside 5-10 minutes a day to work on these foot skills and not only will you notice the improvement, but I guarantee that your coach and trainer will notice too.
